A Follow — Dylan is a rad creator. He travels, fishes, promotes brands like All Hands Craft Cocktails and he hates Jet Skis. Here’s a photo he took in 2021 that landed on the cover of @thedrakemagazine.
I took this photo May 2021 in the Florida Keys. Despite missing bedtime the night before due to friends in town, we rallied to the ramp before sunrise. On our commute to tarpon country, we felt the wind die below some dark clouds then a line dropped to the water next to a skiff we were passing. I stopped to take a photo and line up the shot how I wanted all while keeping our distance from the water spout, and the guide. Getting too close to either is a bad idea..I wasn’t on a shoot and had a good stretch of fun fishing so it was weeks before I actually dumped the SD card and looked at the photos. Later that year I submitted this photo to Drake Magazine who chose to use as their cover photo, my first @thedrakemagazine cover photo.
A Guide — Steve Huff is a legendary fly fishing guide who started his career in the late 1960’s. In 2010, he became the first full-time professional fishing guide ever inducted into the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame.
Premiered Feb 13, 2023 — Captain Steve Huff’s illustrious career and dedication to conserving Florida’s Everglades is showcased in a powerful new film directed by Captain David Mangum and Patrick Rhea and produced by SEAHOLM and Gordy & Sons Outfitters with support from Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT), Patagonia, YETI, Captains for Clean Water, and the International Game Fish Association (IGFA).
A Fly – Northern California artist and angler, Ben Engle conceptualized the Looks Better Wet (LBW) fly, which is a modified version of Lefty Kreh’s well-known Lefty’s Deceiver. Engle incorporated an EP Foxy Brush head into the fly, creating a simple baitfish profile great for hunting striped bass in shallow water.
A Read — The ongoing red tide in Southwest Florida has been worsened by the damage caused by Hurricane Ian. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission provides regular updates on the red tide. While red tide is a natural occurrence, organizations like BTT are making efforts to minimize human-caused factors that can make it worse.
A Recipe — Alison Roman is a cookbook author, food writer, and former columnist for The New York Times. I often find myself craving her simple, balanced cooking like this sheet pat chicken which has become a favorite in our house.
Gear — Whether your fishing salt or fresh water, a good pair of pliers can save the day and your fish. I recently purchased these Gerber Magnipliers for saltwater applications and finished one season so far. While there’s a bit of tarnish from smashing stripers all season, they’re still in great shape.
